Boys Basketball Weekend Preview
The unanimous #1 team in Class 4A will have a good opening test to start the season. Natrona plays at #4 East...a game in which the Thunderbirds won last year, although the Mustangs beat them back in the first round of the state tournament. Nc will also square off against Central and Lander this weekend. #2 Gillette only has a Saturday game, home vs. Green River to worry about. #3 Rock Springs will be in Cheyenne to take on Laramie, Lander, and Kelly Walsh. After their game against #1 NC...the #4 Thunderbirds will play #5 Evanston and Riverton at home. As for the fifth ranked Red Devils...their schedule reads, Kelly Walsh, #4 East, and Laramie.
In Class 3A, top ranked, defending state champion Torrington will play in the Western Conference Tournament hosted by Scottsbluff, NE, but the Trailblazers get their first game home vs. Gering, NE. #4 Douglas will also play in the tournament. #2 Buffalo probably has the hardest schedule of them all. First off, they are home vs. unranked Pinedale, who is last season's 3rd place team. Then on Saturday, the Bison play #3 Jackson AND #5 Cody. Jackson also has games vs. Rawlins and Newcastle, while Cody plays Wheatland and Newcastle.
The top ranked, defending 2A state champion Wyoming Indian Chiefs, will play north of the border at the Southern Classic in Billings, MT. #2 Lovell will have their hands full first with Kemmerer on Friday, then #5 (tie) Wind River on Saturday afternoon, then a #2 vs. #2 game at 1A Burlington. #3 Greybull will start off on Thursday night vs. Big Piney, then play Dubois and Kemmerer on Friday, and finish off with #5 (tie) Wind River on Saturday. On a side note...Kemmerer will be playing the 2 teams that eliminated them from last season's regional tournament. #4 Big Horn will play 3 games at the Tiger Jamboree in Lusk. Wind River and Southeast are tied for #5 in the 2A poll. The Cougars will have the harder schedule playing in Big Horn County vs. #2 1A Burlington on Friday, then #2 Lovell and #3 Greybull on Saturday. Meanwhile the Cyclones will stay at home and entertain Morrill, NE.
For the 1A top 5 teams...#1 Little Snake River will play in Hanna at the Carbon County Invitational, vs. 3 2A teams...Wirhgt, Saratoga and Lingle-Ft. Laramie. #2 Burlington will host 2A Big Piney, #5 (tie) 2A Wind River, and then #2 2A Lovell. #3 St. Stephens will play at the Southern Classic at Billings, MT, while #4 Ten Sleep and co-#5's Kaycee and Midwest will compete at the Upton Tournament.
