Douglas Tears Up Cody [VIDEO]
Highlights of the Friday, September 13th, 3A Football Game, between #3 Cody at #2 Douglas.
Showing that last week's blowout win at Green River was not a fluke, the Bearcats pounced all-over the Broncs in the first half, to establish their validity.
A good rule of thumb...if the cheerleaders make a big sign with a big message...you better not disappoint them.
#3 Cody at #2 Douglas...first quarter...Cody wearing the white, and you do NOT want this happen on the first play from scrimmage...or on any play if you're on offense...Hunter Haman recovers at the 3...and the boys in blue were in a prime position to strike early.
2 plays later...they would...Logan Barker is going to let himself in with ease...plus the 2...this game is less than 30 seconds old, and Douglas is already up 8-to-nothing.
The Broncs did not get off to a good start...in fact they had a hard time getting started at all....John Beaudrie is looking for somebody, but all he saw was Bay Parks and down he goes. It got worse later on, and you'll see how and why.
The Bearcats would get the ball back and they went right to work...this was a great highlight...but there was a catch...Austyn Matthews is scrambling...has his eyes on a target...takes a chance from 25 yards and watch the grab by Barker...kept his feet in-bounds...but someone got a yellow hankie earlier, so that play counted for nothing, but it was fun to watch.
That did not deter Douglas...they kept the drive going...Matthews is going the other way...feels the pressure...gets rid of the ball...Garret Boner makes the catch...slips 1 tackle...2 tackles...3 tackles...reaches across and scores. That's determination and it payed off. The home team was up 15-zip after the first 12 minutes.
Second quarter...here comes more...Matthews over the middle to Barker again...and the senior is hard to tackle...22 yards to paydirt...the Bearcats are showing that they are for real...now up 22-to-nothing.
As for the Broncs...they tried to answer...and would go for it on 4th down at the Douglas 29...but Parks would get to Beaudrie first and then his team-mates would finish the job...Cody has never beaten Douglas coming into this game...and so far, it was not looking promising.
The boys in blue have an offense as well...and they can make something out of nothing...Matthews with a screen to Chance Miller and the latter follows his blocker and ends up with a lot of room to run...this is a 54-yard pickup, all the way down to the 16 yard line...and that was a 1st and 38 play...talk about making up ground.
Now to finish the drive...Matthews is back to pass again...here comes Blake Brooks on a slant route for a 4-yard touchdown reception...the home team was dominating all points of this game, and are now ahead 29-to-zip.
...and it got worse for the visitors...in particular Beaudrie...bad snap...he should have fallen down right there, because that nail got hammered hard by Miller, who would also recover the fumble. The boys in blue were making their opponents see blue the entire first half...it was 29-to-zero going into halftime.
3rd quarter...the Bronc defense came out inspired...Byron Perry comes in from the right side and introduces Matthews into the ground. There may be some hope yet...if they can catch another break.
Next play...they got it...Matthews runs into his own man, but manages to hang on to the ball, so that play will go down as a safety...well, it got rid of the zero...visitors now trail 29-to-2.
After the free kick...Cody would work their way into the red zone...and then fumble their way out of it...talk about a momentum killer...at times they were their own worst enemy. Miller recovered the loose ball for the home team.
So the Broncs defense had to get back to work and they were doing a better job...Blake Hinze read that play right and picked off the pass to help his teams' cause...but the offense could not do anything with the ball, and eventually had to give it back.
The Bearcats would regroup and get it back together...Barker...told you he was hard to tackle...he'll work his way to the outside...turns on the jets and scores his 3rd TD...this one from 31 yards...it's not officially over...but it's over, with the scoreboard reading 35-to-2, going into the final 12 minutes.
4th quarter...not much to show except for this play...Cody would finally score with 9 seconds remaining...Carter Myers does the honors from 2 yards out...but the Bearcats had them clawed up a long time ago...final score...35-to-9.
