The defending champion Lady Thunderbirds unloaded on the Lady Broncs with 3 goals, in the last 5 minutes of the first half, to pave the way to repeating as state champs, but had to wait through a 2 1/2 hour rain and lightening delay, to claim their prize.

Those guys drove roughly 250 miles to do what they did...I suppose there's something to be said about school spirit.

Sheridan vs. Cheyenne East in the 4A State Championship game...first half...East wearing the baby blue...Rachel Erickson has a break-away and the 2-time Gatorade Player of the Year did what she does best...that's the last goal of her career, because she's heading to Black Hills State to play basketball...but her team is on the board, up 1-nothing.

About 5 minutes before half-time...this is when the defending state champs unloaded on the opposition...Kayla Evans gets control and her foot is faster than the goalie's hands...for her that was some relief after an earlier miss...the score is now 2-zip.

Roughly 3 minutes later...the Lady Thunderbirds were at it again...talk about right place, right time...Jessie Erickson rushes in and delivers a header and finds the back of the net...there's a third Erickson on the team...Sarah...who scored right at the end of the game, and we did not get it...we apologize...Lady Thunderbirds lead at this juncture...3-nil.

1 minute after that...more good timing...Abby Morillon...and it was a case of mind over matter...the result is another goal...and unless a major crash was in the works...the writing was already on the wall...East was ahead 4-nothing going into halftime.

Second half...and after a 2 and 1/2 hour rain and lightening delay...both teams going in the other direction...Marissa Johansson from 43 yards...good screen by Emily Julian and it fooled the goalie...that ball found its way in...the shutout has been avoid, and Sheridan is down by a score of 4-to-1.

It did not long for the Lady T-Birds to get that goal back...they only needed 2 minutes...the third time ended up being the charm as the first 2 shots were blocked...and then Jasline Pace slips one through. It was the championship game and her team meant business, with the scoreboard reading 5-to-1.

When the final whistle sounded after one more goal...the defending champs upgraded themselves to 2-time defending champs, but said last year's win was more difficult, and they had the scoreboard to back that claim.

Final score 6-to-1...East avenges a home loss to the Lady Broncs earlier in the season...and they conclude this season...with a record of 16-2-and-1.
