Plainsmen goalie Kyle Russell extensively watched the video highlights of the shootout loss at the regional tournament, and used it for two key blocks vs. the Camels, enabling his team to win the state championship.

Our thanks to KTWO television, for providing some of the highlights.

Gillette vs. Laramie for the 4A state championship…first half..Laramie wearing the yellow…Blake Wright got loose on a break-away…he went high…the goalie went low…and the Plainsmen were up 1-nothing at half time.

Now in the second half…Gillette trying to counter…because they have the wind at their back…not sure who took that shot, but Kyle Russell would show here that he has recovered from his injury, that forced him to miss most of the season.

But things got hairy in the last 30 seconds of regulation…Russell can’t make the catch…Brandon Swan is behind him with an open net and cashes in for the Camels…we’re tied…and we’re going to skip ahead to the shootout.

Round 1…Laramie went first…Andrew Barnes stays low and the goalie made his move a split-second late…it’s 1-to-nothing.

Gillette’s turn…Blaine Christenson…and that ball is going all the way to Green River. Too much…and Russell caught a break.

Round 2…Wright is back…and things are right with him because the goalie went left…the score is now 2-zip.

The Camels would try again with Alex Germann…stuffed…Russell said he did his homework and watched the video from the shootout at the regional tournament…and it paid off.

Round 3…Cameron Skinner trying to add on…no.

Gillette needs one badly…and Camdin Hinkel will deliver…his team is down 2-to-1.

Round 4…Cormac Martinez del Rio…scores…Plainsmen lead 3-to-1…and now need 1 stop to win it.

Tyler Greener…blocked….game over. Laramie wins the state championship…final score...2-to-1…winning the shootout 3-to-1…and they’ll finish the season with a record of 13-4-and-1.
