With a little more than 1 week before the boys basketball season tips off, the coaches and media have voted on which teams are the ones to look out for early in the season, and which still have something to prove.

Of the 4 #1's, 2 are defending state champs, 1 is a state runner-up and the other had a losing record last season.

That losing record team is in 4A. Cheyenne Central collected 7 of the 11 first place votes to take the top spot. Our guess is that they have most of their players back from last year, and they'll get their chances to prove it. Last season's state runner-ups, Gillette is the #2 team. Both the Indians and Camels will play in Campbell County on opening weekend, just not vs. each other. Kelly Walsh takes the #3 ranking, by 1 vote ahead of #4 Sheridan. Both teams will play each other on opening weekend in Riverton. Defending state champs Natrona is #5. The Mustangs along with unranked Rock Springs will also be playing at Gillette, and should face some good competition to start the season. On side note, unranked Green River enters the season on a 56 game losing streak. The sooner the Wolves can break it, the better.

The top ranked team in 3A...won't get a chance to prove it on opening weekend. Worland is last season's state runner-ups, but the Warriors don't play their first game until the second weekend of the season. Defending state champ Buffalo is not far behind in the rankings and should get 3 good tests in Cody to start the season. #3 Rawlins and #5 Wheatland will be there as well. Star Valley occupies the #4 spot.

Fresh off of their first title win in school history, the voters have put the Wind River Cougars on top of the rankings. A possible 1 vs. 2 clash could be on the horizon to start the season. Both WR and #2 Pine Bluffs will be in Burns. The Hornets only lost 2 games last season on their way to a 3rd place finish...and WR was one of those 2. The Hornets are the only east team ranked. Elsewhere Greybull will start the season at #3, while Wyoming Indian and Big Piney share the #4 spot.

Until a 1A team can beat them, the 2-time defending state champs from Burlington are still on top. This is the 4th year in a row that they've started the season at #1. Behind the Huskies is Kaycee, and then there's a big gap in the voting after that. Upton will host their own tournament as the #3 team. St. Stephens will start at #4, by 1 vote ahead of #5 Little Snake River.
