Some of the new coaches/media rankings show that there are many contenders for the 2018 state championships.

The Thunder Basin boys have a strong case to be ranked #1 in 4A for the time being. The Bolts have shutout their opponents in 5 of 6 games thus far. #2 Rock Springs and #3 Cheyenne Central are settling into the conference portion of their schedule. #4 Kelly Walsh just took Campbell County apart, heading into their spring break. For the first time in school history, Cheyenne South is ranked in the top 5 at #5. The Bison have tied both Casper teams, and just had 2 impressive road wins against Sheridan and Campbell County last week. The Bison return to Casper on Thursday, to play unranked Natrona in a full game (the previous game used only 25-minute halves).

3A Boys is shaping up to be interesting in the early portions of the season. Star Valley and Worland share the #1 ranking. Both will be at the tournament at Green River next week. Whether they play each other, won't be determined until later. #3 Torrington will join them, as well as #4 Buffalo, #5 and defending champ Cody, and every 3A team except for Newcastle.

There has been a change on top of the new 4A Girls rankings. Cheyenne Central is now on top after beating former #1, now #2 Thunder Basin last weekend. Both will resume conference play next week. Rock Springs moves up to #3, and Campbell County drops to #4, after losing to unranked Cheyenne South. Laramie and Kelly Walsh tie for #5 this week. The Lady Trojans might have an argument to move up after forging a 1-1 tie vs. the Lady Camels earlier this week.

There will be a bit of shake-up in the 3A rankings, but not until next week. The votes were already cast, before unranked Powell visited and shut-out #3 Worland back on Tuesday. Defending champ Cody still holds at #1, with Star Valley now at #2 all to themselves. Douglas and Buffalo switch spots at #4 and #5. All but 1 3A team will play at the tournament in Worland next weekend.
