Teammates from the Cody Fillies softball team and the Jackson boys’ soccer team have won the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming WyoPreps Athlete of the Week awards for May 8, 2024. The girls’ honor went to Cody seniors Violet Wollschlager and Riley Simone. The boys’ award went to Jackson senior Teddy Opler and junior Augie Hoelscher. These players were selected for their efforts in the week of April 29 through May 5, 2024.

WYOPREPS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS MAY 8, 2024

The Cody Fillies went 4-0 last weekend and won the West Conference of Wyoming High School Softball for the third straight year. The two seniors, Wollschlager and Simone, were key in the Fillies sweep of two doubleheaders. Wollschlager went 11-for-11 at the plate. She hit two home runs, three triples, and two doubles. Wollschlager had 8 RBIs, scored 8 runs, had one stolen base, and got hit by a pitch twice. The senior hit for the cycle against Rock Springs in a 12-2 victory in game two. With first place on the line in the conference game versus the Tigers last Friday, Simone tossed a 3-hit shutout in the circle. She had 9 strikeouts and walked only 3 batters. In four games at the plate, Simone went 8-for-15 with 3 doubles and a triple. She drove in 6 runs and scored 4 runs. Simone also picked a second win in the circle against Green River.

WyoPreps spoke with the seniors on Wednesday. Wollschlager and Simone discussed their roles in the weekend sweep. Wollschlager was excited about her great weekend at the plate. She described her mentality when she’s at-bat, how she wanted to hit a home run versus Rock Springs, her reaction to hitting for the cycle, and more. Simone described her mindset in the pitching victory over the Tigers, what worked well for her that day, how she faired at the plate, and more.

Jackson had two lopsided victories on the pitch last week, which helped them earn the top seed at the 4A West Regional Tournament and get an automatic bid to the state tournament. Opler and Hoelscher combined for 11 goals and three assists in the two wins. Jackson defeated their two foes by a combined 19-0 score. The Broncs improved to 13-1 on the season and 11-1 in conference matches.

WyoPreps caught up with the senior-junior duo after practice on Wednesday. Both guys discussed their attacking mindset on the pitch, the way their chemistry helps them connect on offense and with their teammates, the big season the team is having, and more.
