Lander senior Benny Kulow was named the first winner of the WyoPreps Athlete of the Year Award for Boys’ Swimming and Diving on Friday. The honor is presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming and Wyld Gear. Kulow helped Lander extend their record streak of 3A boys’ state championships to 28 in a row in February. He won two individual events and was on two first-place relays at the state swim meet in Laramie.

Kulow won the title in the 100 and 200 freestyle races. He touched the wall in the 200 freestyle at 1:45.97. He followed that with a season-best time of 47.22 seconds, the fastest in the state in his victory in the 100-freestyle race. Kulow also helped the Tigers win the 200-medley relay at 1:34.95 and the 400-freestyle relay at 3:16.39. Kulow was selected as the 3A Athlete of the Year by the coaches. His efforts led Lander to 308 team points at the state championships. They won by nearly 66 points. Kulow ranked in the top seven of all eight individual swimming events among 3A boys this winter. He had the fastest times in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, and 100 butterfly events. Kulow was second in the 200-individual medley and ranked third in the 100-backstroke.
