Torrington got off to a slow start this season with a pair of losses to Nebraska schools but this group finished fast as they held off defending champion Big Horn 28-26 to win the 2A football state championship in Laramie on Friday.

The teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter as Kaiden Riggs got into the end zone from 3 yards out to give the Blazers a 7-0 lead. Big Horn answered back with a 79-yard TD connection from Avon Barney to Caleb Gibson but the extra point was missed and it was 7-6.

Torrington found some traction in the 2nd quarter as Bryce Hager scooted into the end zone from 7 yards out to make it 14-6. Big Horn answered again as Barney scored on a 4-yard run to cut the gap to 14-12. Near the end of the 2nd quarter, Kaiden Riggs caught an 11-yard TD pass so at the intermission, Torrington led 21-12.

After a scoreless 3rd quarter, Big Horn got right back into the game on a 4-yard run for a touchdown so the Rams were down 2 at 21-19. With under 4 minutes to go in the game, Riggs extended Torrington's lead to 28-19 with a 4-yard run for a score. Big Horn came right back a minute later on another Cruz touchdown to make it 28-26 and that was as close as the Rams would come.

Torrington won their first state title since 1990 and finished the year 9-3. It was another solid year of football for Big Horn and the Rams concluded the season 9-2. We have a video to share from that title game in Laramie on Friday and some fantastic photos of the game from Libby Ngo. They can be located in our gallery below. Enjoy!
