Kelly Walsh track athlete Caleb Ortberg has chosen Black Hills State in South Dakota as his next stop on his athletic journey. He won the 4A Indoor State Championship in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.77.  Ortberg was also on the Trojans 4x400 relay team that placed 4th and the 4x200 that took 6th. In his junior season at the State Indoor Championships, he was 3rd in the 4A 55 hurdles and his 4x200 & 4x400 relay squads placed 4th.

In last season's State Outdoor Track Meet, Ortberg placed 6th in the 4A 300 hurdles and qualified for the 110 hurdles. On the 2024 outdoor circuit, he had a 1st place finish in the 300 hurdles at the Benson Meet in Sheridan in 40.24 which is his best mark of the season in that event. Ortberg was 2nd in the 110 hurdles in Sheridan and took the gold medal in the 100-meter dash at the Natrona Invite plus 2nd place finishes in the 200 and the 400. Earlier this week, he was 2nd in the 110 hurdles and 3 in the 200 at the Basin Nation event in Gillette.

Ortberg also played football for KW recording 41 tackles on defense with 4 sacks. Black Hills State is a Division II school that is a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
