The WyoPreps Athlete of the Week honors, presented by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Wyoming, went to champion volleyball and football players.

After the considering performances from the volleyball state tournament and last weekend’s football championships, the girls’ award went to Big Horn duo Saydee Zimmer and Emme Mullinax, and the boys’ honor belonged to Torrington’s Kaiden Riggs.

Zimmer and Mullinax helped the Big Horn Rams to the Class 2A volleyball state championship on Nov. 4. It was the Rams’ second title in the last three seasons. Zimmer had 45 kills over three matches and a .287 hitting percentage. She added 12 service aces, 28 digs, and two total blocks. Mullinax contributed a team-high 61 kills over the three matches. She hit .297 at the state tournament and added 29 digs, six service aces, and three total blocks. It helped Big Horn defeat Big Piney, Tongue River, and Burns on the way to the title.

We spoke with Zimmer and Mullinax about winning another championship, what the key to that weekend was, what it’s like to play for Coach Nikont and more.

Riggs helped the Torrington Trailblazers win a football state title for the first time in 33 years. He ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns, which included what turned out to be the game-winner with 3:39 left in the contest. Riggs added four catches for 80 yards and a TD receiving.

WyoPreps chatted with Riggs about whether the feeling of winning the championship had finally sunk in and his big game. Riggs discussed how key his offensive line was, what the title meant to the community, and more.

Congratulations to Saydee, Emme, and Kaiden.

The WyoPreps Athlete of the Week nominations are still being accepted for championship weekend performances from girls’ swimming and diving, volleyball, and football. We will be featuring more student-athletes in between fall and winter sports.
