It’s not only the start of a new season but a new regime for the Star Valley boys’ basketball team.

The Braves went 17-10 last season and won the 4A Southwest Quadrant and 4A West Regional titles. They lost in the consolation championship game at the 4A state basketball tournament.

Only two players who played varsity action regularly return for Star Valley, according to new head coach Matt Shumway. Those two are starting junior guard PJ Horsley and sophomore Cooper Lancaster.

Senior Simon Gaskell and Horsley, plus head coach Matt Shumway, joined WyoPreps during our Preseason Basketball Tour on the second leg of a visit to Afton. We touched on how things are going so far in practice, what they are emphasizing early to prep for the season, adjusting to a new coach or new team, and more.

The Braves have rattled off five straight appearances in the 4A state basketball tournament. They would love to continue that streak, but with a new head coach, it might take a little time to figure out the new system and player rotations.

Just like their girls, Star Valley faces Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne East, Lander, and Sheridan over the opening weekend of the season at the Strannigan Classic in Riverton.
