TCT and Mywyoming.org are teaming up with Central Wyoming College Radio instructor and Wyopreps co-founder, John Gabrielsen, to provide coverage of every regional basketball game in Lander and Riverton this weekend. TCT will furnish the video streams from each venue while students enrolled in Gabrielsen’s Sports Broadcasting Class at CWC will be the play by play and color for each game.

Gabrielsen has about seven students in the class that focuses on sports play by play, sports reporting, and sports talk radio. They will be on hand for games all weekend as well as the next two weekend’s in Casper for State.

TCT also is 99% sure that the championship games for all four classes will be delivered online in High Definition (HD). Games are available online at MYWYOMING.ORG. Fans can also access archives of games from through out the season as well as post season tournaments. They can either view them again online, or purchase a DVD copy of the contest as well.

New basketball rankings are out for the boys. For 1A and 2A it is their final polls of the season.

New basketball rankings are out for the boys. For 1A and 2A it is their final polls of the season.

Basketball Tuesday night saw the newly #1 ranked Torrington boys crushed at Scottsbluff, NE 79 to 34. While they were getting beat outside of the state borders, The Blazers would get 12 of the 18 #1 votes in 3A this week to take that top spot after clinching the #1 seed in the East last weekend. Powell took five top votes and rank 2nd. Star Valley got a vote and ranks third. Lander and Buffalo round out the 3A top five.

4A has Evanston still at #1, but barely. The Red Devils took 7 top votes and outscored #2 Gillette 129 to 126 this week. East moves into third pushing Sheridan to fourth. Natrona makes the polls for the first time this year as the Mustangs got their second win over Riverton, puts them fifth.

The big rematch in 4A has #2 Gillette at #4 Sheridan on Friday, for the top seed in the 4A East.

The Final 1A and 2A boys basketball polls of the season are now available. Lovell and unbeaten Little Snake River take top seeds into the regional weekend. In 1A, The Rattlers are a unanimous choice for #1 followed by Burlington who took all of the #2 votes. Midwest and Ten Sleep remain 3 and 4 while the Lingle-Ft. Laramie Doggers make a late debut on the polls at #5 this week.

In 2A, the top three ranked teams will meet in Riverton. Lovell is #1 with Wyoming Indian now #2 after having beaten Wind River in Pavillion. The Cougars drop to third. They, though, have the #1 seed from the south and force the Chiefs to potentially play the Bulldogs in the semi finals. Burns and Moorcroft round out the top five.

Here are some of the things that you can pay attention to as you watch our state tournament when it gets underway this weekend.

Here are some of the things that you can pay attention to as you watch our state tournament when it gets underway this weekend.

This is from Spencer Condie who has spent a LOT of time researching Wyoming Wrestling History. He has a smart phone app that you can buy that puts this information at your fingertips.

CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE STATE TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

The following young men are to be congratulated (or should I say “Potentially” congratulated) because of what they could wrap up by the weekend. Not everyone is lucky enough to come away with a medal during each year of their high school careers but the following senior athletes have done just that in the 3 years leading up to their campaign.

1A/2A

Bailey Hepp, Wright – Colton Lantz, Big Piney – Nathan Hetzel, Greybull – Taylen Arnett, Lingle/Lusk – Tom Stockwell, Saratoga.

3A:

Jay Stine, Worland – Karsten Hauf, Mtn. View – Lane Read, Douglas – Olie Olson, Powell – Randy Andrews, Powell – Reed Burgener, Douglas – TJ Guild, Star Valley.

4A:

Burke Burgess, Gillette – Cody Vichi, Rock Springs/Big Piney – Ryan Slaugh, Rock Springs – Tanner Olson, Gillette.

13 Young men are looking to move over from one list (Champions) to another list (2XChamps) and they are:

Bobby West – Cody, Brigham Teichert – Cokeville, Burke Burgess – Gillette, Jordan Hanson – Lander, Justin Lewton – Worland, Mark Grant – Lovell, Preston Blankenship – Lovell, Randy Andrews – Powell, Reed Burgener – Douglas, Tanner Miller – Douglas, Tanner Olson – Gillette, Taylen Arnett – Lusk/Lingle and Tenor Teichert of Cokeville.

6 Wyoming athletes are looking to become part of a very exclusive club and bring the number to 92, the number of champions who were crowned 3 times. Up to this point we have had 86 such athletes in our history.

I thought it appropriate that when it comes to kids making the finals each of their 4 years, we have the potential to boost that by exactly……….you guessed it, 4. These young men are looking to become members of the 4XFN (4-time finalist) club bringing that membership # to 35.

There are currently 214 families that are featured on the smart phone app for droids (SBC Wrestling) or itunes (Champs Stats) who have had at least 6 placewinners with at least one of those being a champion, and there are a good number of families who are looking to either join that growing list, or improve their numbers on either side, (championships, or total placewinners)

Some of those families are also featured as having a championship percentage of at least 20% meaning out of 5 place winners 1 was a champion, or 2 out of 10 etc. There are currently 242 of those families. Some of those percentages will go up and unfortunately some will go down, but there are likely going to be about 25-30 that are either added to that club, or move up OR down from where they currently stand.

Some team information that I am looking to draw attention to also:

Star Valley will likely be getting some company among teams that have had over 400 Place winners. Powell currently sits very close at 391. Only one team has a real shot at getting over 300, as they are currently sitting at 291 Placewinners. 4 teams are right on the verge of having at least 200 placewinners, and each of those teams will likely get over that milestone this year, perhaps only 3, we’ll have to see.

There are 12 teams that can boast of having at least 60 individual state titles, and that could potentially increase to 13, and of those that have had at least 70 titleists, there are 8 and that could possibly go to 11, with 3 teams within reach of that marker.

8 teams have won at least 7 team titles, and that has the potential to increase to 10 after this weekend.

13 teams are looking to extend their streak of having at least 1 place winner, for over 40 straight years, with one team looking to join them with a current streak of 39 years. Longer than a lot of fans lifetime, and double that of any current athlete.

One of the longest streaks in our state’s history has the very real potential of coming to an end after this season. The same streak that ended last season for another team could happen to them this year. They have put one of their athletes into the finals for the last consecutive years, and for 26 years, someone from this school has been crowned as a state champion, going back to 1986, both of which are currently the state’s high water marks for each category.

If it’s bugging you not knowing the who’s and what’s about what I’ve left blank, then come up to the WyoWrestling.com booth that will be set up near where the donuts are sold and you can definitely find those things out for yourself, and probably much more than you ever knew you didn’t know.

Thanks to Spencer Condie of WyoWrestling.com!

What was supposed to be a battle for first place in the 1A Northwest, was anything except that unfortunately.

Aside from the players, coaches, referees and myself…these are the only 2 people that HAD to watch this game…and I’m sorry to say…it was not pretty.

Number 2 Burlington at Ten Sleep…first quarter…Burlington wearing the black…if you leave Sadie Neves wide open like that…she’ll bury long balls all game long…Lady Huskies strike first up 3-to-nothing.

The visitors were mushing forward from the get go and never looked back…Shelby Nicholson led all scorers with 17, which included that turn-around jumper…her team leads 5-zip.

This girl is just a sophomore and she’s already doing pretty good…here comes another bucket and she’ll get one more from the refs as a reward…the Lady Huskies were taking control early, up 8-to-nothing.

There was more to come…and for awhile it was coming from Nicholson…another bucket…this one in traffic…Burlington was starting to turn this game into a blow-out with an 11-zip advantage.

More from the vistors…and more from Nicholson AGAIN! She was on fire in the first quarter and Ten Sleep had no way to stop her…when the dust settled on the first 8 minutes…the Lady Pioneers found themselves down 14-to-1.

2nd quarter…it was only going to get worse, before it got any better…Neves kisses one off the glass and gets thewhistle…the senior had 16 points in this contest and the 3-point play put the Lady Huskies up 17-to-1.

This game was supposed to be for first place in the 1A northwest…sadly it was not meant to be for the home team…Nicholson strikes again and Burlington is just burying the competition…21-to-3.

Ok…finally…a highlight for Ten Sleep…here we go…Michayla Miller is a freshman and she’ll do the honors with a base-line drive and that was the only field goal of the first half for the Lady Pioneers…they trail 21-to-5 at this point.

Eventually the visitors did call off the dogs, but you do have to give your starters a decent amount of playing time…Neves comes up with her own miss and sticks it back in for 2…and the Lady Huskies would go into the locker room, leading 27-to-5.

3rd quarter…the veterans would go just a little bit longer…no one is guarding Neves, so guess what’s going to happen? Uh-huh…Burlington is cruising with a 36-to-5 advantage.

Ok…that’s enough from the visitors…we quit recording when they had the ball, because we had to give a little bit of love to Ten Sleep…Halli Stocklin drains a 3 from behind the arc…her teams still trails, 36-to-8.

A short time later…here she comes again. She’ll get around 1 defender and then throw up a shot that will get up, over and in…but there was more work to be done…the Lady Pioneers were down 40-to-10 going into the final 8 minutes.

We’ll give the home team the benefit of a doubt…they just had a really bad day and unfourtunately we showed up for it…Sharon Eggink will score 2 points up close…but in the end…Burlington was just too much…winning this game in a rout…48-to-19.

Highlights of the Thursday, February 16th boys basketball game between Kaycee at #3 Midwest.

Scroll down to watch the highlights of the game!

The Buckaroos would weather the storm and pull off the road upset of their arch-rivals.

One thing you got to learn about my job…no place is safe from way-ward basketballs…and don’t use the camera as a shield.

Kaycee at Number 3 Midwest…first quarter…Midwest wearing the white…Ty Fenster is just inside the line so that shot will go in for a long 2, but the Oilers are on the board first.

They were using some fast passes early on and it was leading to points…Chad Rinker is going to come in from the backdoor and surprise the defense…his team would jump out to a 4-zip lead.

Kaycee was taking things at a little slower pace but it was getting the job done…this is Beau Lund putting in the first 2 of his 12 points and the Buckaroos are only down 4-to-2.

Coming into this game…Midwest had already wrapped up the top seed in the 1A northeast…but they wanted to win the home finale…especially against the arch-rival…Adam VanNorman stirkes for 2 of his 20 and the home team is up 9-to-4.

The boys in blue didn’t have much to lose in this one either…except for bragging rights…Markus Koch muscles his way way for a bucket…10 points for him and the visitors are only down 11-to-9.

The Oilers though were looking to keep the pumps going in their gym…Fenster is at the top of the key and he’ll open the door for 3…23 points for the senior…his team now has a 19-to-12 advantage.

Let’s get a little defense and transition in here…Rinker will rip off somebody…now it’s just a foot-race to the other end of the court…he’d win and get 2 points just ahead of the first quarter buzzer…Midwest was in decent shape up 21-to-12 after the first 8 minutes.

2nd quarter…some plays were just wayyy too easy and here’s a great example…someone forgot about Rinker and the paint was wide open…the home would maintain their advantage up 23-15.

Then Kaycee got a little generous on this next highlight…a little too much on the inbounds pass and here comes VanNorman who will cash in on the free gift…the lead is into double digits with Midwest up 26-to-15.

The opposition would then tighten up their defense some…Jordan Larget saw that play coming from a mile away…he’s only a 5 foot 10 inch freshman. Give him a few years and he’ll grow a few more inches.

Meanwhile on the other end…the Buckaroos were slowly chipping away at the deficit…Chase Gosney can’t find anyone to pass the ball to…so he says…what the heck…I’ll shoot it. Good idea. 14 points for the freshman…his team is down 26-21.

The Oilers though were thinking long range…VanNorman wants to make a call and he’s got plenty of minutes left on his cell phone plan…that was the boost his team needed as they go back up 29-to-21.

But then the visitors would get it in gear…you’ve heard of an 8 second ride…well here comes an 8 point ride…Mathew Tehau will light this ball up for 3 and can it…Buckaroos are down 31-to-26 at this point.

Then off the inbounds…James Caro…his 3 finds nothing but net and his team is right back in this game, down 31-29.

Time is short but if they hurry they can get one more in…Lund is already way ahead of the pack…he’ll score the lay-in ahead of the buzzer…Kaycee goes on an 8-zip in the last minute before the break, and this game is tied up at 31-points a piece, going into the locker room.

Ok…watch carefully…you might see yourselves…keep watching…make sure you’re recording!

3rd quarter…the Oilers would regroup…VanNorman plants his feet, and the reward is so sweet. The 3-ball has his team back in the lead…34-to-31.

But then the Buckaroos were starting to use their speed and it was starting to pay off…Lund is already wide open on the other end of the court…he’ll cruise in for another 2, and the visitors are only down 34-33.

Later…the boys in blue were thinking about taking their first lead of the game…and it could not have come at a better time…Caro drains the 3-ball in the side pocket and now his team has the advantage, up 38-36.

That did not sit to well with the home and they were determined to right the ship…Fenster first try is rejected but he gets the loose ball…bucket and the whistle…the 3-point play now has Midwest back on top, 39-to-38.

Skipping ahead a little bit…The Buckaroos were starting to saddle up right around now…that was an ugly shot but somehow Gosney got to drop…that’s all that matters…the score is tied at 42.

The freshman was taking charge for a bit…here’s a better looking turn-around jumper…the visitors were on the move leadig this contest, 47-to-42.

And the Kaycee D was making a few plays as well…Tehau says no 2nd’s for you. Put your tray in the pile with the other dirty dishes. The Buckaroos would hold that 47-42 advantage going into the final 8 minutes.

4th quarter…Midwest tries to come back…VanNorman intercepts the pass and he’ll take it to the far side and put it away for another 2…his team is within striking distance, down 49-to-44.

But Oilers had a little problem realizing where TeHau was…here’s comes another sophomore swat…but Kaycee has to work a little bit on their fast-break finishes, as the outlet pass could not be handled, but they saved 2 points for now.

The home team though…did not really need those 2 points…not when they can go for 3 instead…Fenster takes aim..lets ‘er fly…and connects…this is a close one…Oilers trail, 51-to-49.

But the Buckaroos were trying to buck off the compeition…quickly…Tehau is going get his points the hard way…and I do mean the hard way as he’ll take a spill, but he got the points, and 1 more…the boys in blue still have the advantage…54-to-49.

Midwest though was stepping up their defense in their own way…Fenster gets another swipe and he’s knows what to do with it…the 2 teams were trading baskets but the opposition still held the lead 54-to-51.

We need to get someone new in here…how about Garrett Kremers? He came in off of the bench just to sink that jumper and provide his team a 5 point advantage.

The big thing now is that time is starting to become a problem for the home team…Tony Butler will try to relieve some of the pressure with this 3…but Oilers were not able to do much after that.

Kaycee would stun their arch-rivals with a big road win, heading into the regional tournament…63-to-57.
