The WyoPreps Athlete of the Year Award is presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming and in cooperation with Wyld Gear. The first recipient of our football honor is Sheridan senior Dane Steel. He finished an outstanding prep football career by leading his team to a third state championship and has swept all the major awards in Wyoming High School football.

Steel led the Broncs to a 12-0 record and their 30th title in school history. He was the key playmaker in all three phases of the game. He caught 44 passes for 970 yards and 9 TDs. He averaged 22 yards per catch. Steel added 44 rushes for 368 yards and 8 more touchdowns. He also returned 6 punts for a TD and averaged 21.2 yards per return. Steel returned one kick-off 99 yards for a TD versus Cheyenne East. On defense, he averaged 9.4 defensive points per game. Steel finished with 35 tackles, two tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, and six interceptions. He also had one pass breakup, one forced fumble, and one blocked kick. Steel scored two TDs on defense, as well.

In the 4A state championship game, Steel hauled in 7 passes for 131 yards, which included a 67-yard TD that gave the Broncs a 7-0 lead in the second quarter. On defense, he contributed one fumble recovery, one interception, one pass breakup, and five total tackles.

Steel was a unanimous selection as the 4A Offensive Player of the Year and 4A Defensive Player of the Year by the coaches. He received the Gatorade Wyoming Football Player of the Year Award and has signed to play football at Montana State University.

WyoPreps spoke with Steel about our first football award. He reflected on his terrific senior season, winning another title, how much his teammates and coaches helped him, the culture of the Sheridan program, and more.
