Big Horn Stuns Lovell for 2A Football Title
One of the more memorable rallies in the history of Wyoming Championship football occurred on Friday in Laramie as Big Horn snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with an 8-7 win over Lovell in the 2A title game.
Lovell had a 7-0 lead thanks to a 1st quarter touchdown from Ben Nichols and the Bulldogs had Big Horn pinned at the 3-yard line with 1:41 to go in the game leading by that same margin. The Rams managed to go nearly the length of the field for a touchdown in a drive that included 2 sacks and a 4th down and 19 conversion to save their season. With 11 seconds to go, Big Horn quarterback Cooper Garber found Dawson Richards for a sizable gain, and then Richards turned on the jets to the middle of the field and found the end for a 61-yard touchdown reception.
So the Rams trailed 7-6 and in a very, very gutsy call, they elected to go for 2. Using a play that they practiced during the week, Big Horn converted the 2-point try on a reverse with receiver Avon Barney throwing to the quarterback Garber. It was an unreal ending as Big Horn wins their first state title since 2019. It was a heartbreaking loss for Lovell who was defeated by Lyman 8-6 in last year's championship game. Both teams finish the season 10-1.
