Cody’s Tara Joyce Sets a New State Record at 3A Girls State Swimming
The Class 3A girls’ swimming and diving state championships began on Thursday in Gillette at the Campbell County Aquatics Center.
Cody’s Tara Joyce broke her own 3A state record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.80 seconds in the prelims. She set the previous mark of 52.02 seconds at the conference meet two weeks ago.
Joyce had the top qualifying time in the 100 and 200 freestyle races.
Green River freshman Tanith Smith was the only other swimmer with a top time in two events. She’s the fastest qualifier in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke races.
Lander had the best time in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
Green River had the top mark in the 400 freestyle relay.
Other event leaders entering the finals include defending state champion Makenna Lambert from Buffalo in the 200 individual medley race. Kami Jensen of Powell has a lead of ten points in diving after the prelims and semifinals. Lander’s Ashlon Koch had the top time in the butterfly face. Green River’s Courtney Clark was the fastest in the 500 freestyle race, while her teammate Lilly Munoz had the best time in the 100 breaststroke race.
Green River remains the favorite heading into the finals.
The Class 3A state championship finals begin at 9:30 on Friday morning.
