With two state records and two awards in hand, Cody junior Tara Joyce was the star of the Class 3A Girls’ Swimming & Diving State Championships in Gillette.

Joyce won the 100 and 200 freestyle races dominantly. The junior broke her state records in both events. Joyce also received the 3A Athlete of the Meet and 3A Athlete of the Year Awards.

In the 200 free, the junior won by over 10 seconds with a new record time of 1:51.98.

Later in the meet, Joyce broke her record in the 100 free that she set a day earlier in the prelims. Her time was 51.49 seconds. That was 4.5 seconds faster than second place.

WyoPreps talked with Joyce after her performance at the championships and the awards she won. That’s the focus of the video at the top of this story.

In the relays, the junior anchored the Cody team to a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:46.26) and third-place in the 400 freestyle relay (3:50.71).

As a team, the Fillies placed sixth with 116 points. Joyce had a hand in scoring 76 of those points.

It’s safe to say she’s one of the top swimmers in Wyoming.
