For the most part, the prelims of the 4A girls’ swimming and diving state swim meet went how they should have.

Many of the top swimmers and divers performed the way they were expected to before the championships.

Laramie is still favored to win their fifth straight team title, but Cheyenne Central and Campbell County continued their push.

Four events are led by Laramie. Anna Roesler had the best qualifying time in the 200 freestyle race. In a small surprise, Mallorie Hamel leads Natalie Six by just over seven points in the diving. Defending champ Ashlyn Mathes was the top qualifier in the 500 freestyle race, and Laramie had the best time in the 400 freestyle relay.

Cheyenne Central is guided by senior Kira Brownell. She had the top time in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke races. The Indians also had the best time in the 200 medley relay.

Campbell County’s Berkeley Christensen was the fastest in prelims in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly races. Defending state champion Skye Rehard topped the 100 breaststroke prelim race. The Camels also have the top time in the 200 freestyle relay.

The only event not led by one of the top three teams was the 100 freestyle race. Kelly Walsh sophomore Chayse Schierkolk had the top time.

No state records were broken in the 4A prelims.

The finals start at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Campbell County Aquatics Center in Gillette.
