WyoPreps Game of the Week: #2 Cody at #4 Powell [VIDEO]
The Big Horn Brawl was voted as the WyoPreps Game of the Week. The two Park County rivals square off, as No. 4 Powell hosts second-ranked Cody to open 3A West Conference action at Panthers Stadium. The Broncs are off to a 3-0 start, while Powell is 3-1.
Cody has wins over Riverton, Douglas, and Buffalo. After a season-opening loss to Riverton, the Panthers have bounced back with victories against Worland, Lander, and Douglas.
WyoPreps spoke to head coaches Matt McFadden and Chase Kistler to preview the game. Both discussed their season up to this point, some areas that need improvement, how this game means a little more, what they see from each other’s squads, and a few keys.
Cody comes in with the top offense in 3A at 448 yards and 50.7 points per game. The Broncs are balanced with an average of 210 yards rushing and 3A-leading 238 yards passing. QB Maddax Ball leads 3A at 217 yards per game. He has 5 TDs, zero interceptions, and has completed 77 percent of his passes. Cody allows 241 yards and 12 points per game. Chase Hatch ranks third in defensive points per game at 15.7.
Powell counters with 3A’s No. 2 ranked defense, which allows only 184 yards and 7.2 points per game. They give up only 87 yards on the ground and 97 through the air. Trevon Abraham and Keona Wisniewski anchor the Panthers’ defense. They are fourth and sixth in defensive points per game at 15.5 and 15.2, respectively. Powell is fourth in offense at 312 yards and 22.5 points per game. Wisniewski also guides the offense and averages over 186 all-purpose yards per game.
Cody has won eight straight against Powell. The last Panthers regular season win was in 2016. Overall, the Broncs have 68 wins compared to 54 for Powell in the series. There have been four ties, and three games have been canceled. This will be the 127th meeting, according to wyoming-football.com. The first meeting was back in 1921.
The kick-off is at 7 p.m. in Powell.
