Gatorade Football Player of the Year Colson Coon Says ‘Playing the Game is Fun’ [VIDEO]
It’s been a goal since one of his older brothers won it. Now, Sheridan’s Colson Coon has a chance to win two Gatorade Wyoming Football Player of the Year awards.
Last month Coon was announced as the 2021-22 winner for the Cowboy State in football. He led the Broncs to the Class 4A state championship, which was their fifth in the last seven seasons. Coon ran for 1,648 yards and 22 touchdowns. He caught four TD passes among his 18 receptions for 305 yards. On defense at linebacker, Coon finished with 69 tackles, three sacks, and two interceptions. He was also named the Class 4A Offensive Player of the Year.
WyoPreps had a chance to visit with Colson Coon last month after the announcement from The Gatorade Company about winning this award. We apologize for the delay in the story, but tech issues prevented the production.
In the conversation, Coon discussed how, at first, he didn’t think it was real, but how cool it is to be honored. He admitted it was something he wanted to accomplish after his older brother Garrett Coon won the award in 2019. Colson talked about what he focused on improving from his sophomore to junior season, the big fourth down and one play versus Rock Springs, how the loss at Cheyenne East got them going in the right direction, and so much more. Coon talks about his family influence, including what his older brothers taught him, how he describes his play or how he wants to play on the field, his future, and more.
Coon also wrestles and plays soccer for Sheridan High School. He’ll have another shot at a Gatorade Award next fall.
Our thanks to Colson for taking the time to visit with us!
