Laramie and Sheridan Earn the WyoPreps Athlete of the Week Honors for 11-29-23
The WyoPreps Athlete of the Week honors, presented by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Wyoming, center around Class 4A champions from earlier this month.
Looking back at some of the top efforts during state championships for volleyball and football, this week’s honors go to Laramie junior Michon Sailors, and the Sheridan Broncs’ football team.
Sailors helped Laramie win their third Class 4A volleyball state championship in the last four seasons. The Plainsmen defeated Star Valley in four sets in the first round, and then Cody in five sets in the semifinals. Laramie held off Thunder Basin in the title match by scores of 25-23, 25-16, 25-27, 21-25, and 15-11. Sailors had 41 kills, 17 total blocks, and 14 digs over the three matches. She added three service aces and three assists.
WyoPreps chatted with Sailors on Thursday about the latest title, what she felt was a key to Laramie winning it all, how she played at the state tournament, how she connected with her setter, how Laramie dealt with the favorite role, and more.
The Sheridan Broncs continue to set the standard for big-school football in Wyoming. For the second time since 2015, Sheridan 3-peated as the 4A football champions. Considering how good of a team they were, WyoPreps chose the team for this honor rather than an individual player. Thus, we went with Coach Mowry to reflect on the title.
Mowry discussed the standard that’s been set in the community, how it goes back through the years, how well the team focused on improving week by week, unsung heroes, another undefeated season, and more.
Congratulations to Michon and the Broncs.
The WyoPreps Athlete of the Week nominations are still being accepted for championship weekend performances from girls’ swimming and diving, volleyball, and football. We will be featuring more student-athletes in between fall and winter sports.
