North Rolls Past the South, 37-3, in the 2022 Wyoming Shrine Bowl
The North Team won the Wyoming Shrine Bowl for the eighth time in the last nine games with a dominating 37-3 victory over the South Team on Saturday in Casper.
The 49th edition saw the North compile 416 yards of total offense. Sadler Smith of Jackson threw for 103 yards and a touchdown and added 62 yards rushing and another TD. Cam Burkett from Kelly Walsh ran for 49 yards and two more TDs. Cody’s Drew Trotter added six catches for 84 yards. Defensively, the North team had three sacks and forced three turnovers.
Smith was named the Offensive MVP of the Wyoming Shrine Bowl. He had 165 yards of total offense and accounted for two scores.
Cody’s Daniel Gorman was named the Defensive MVP of the game. He finished with 12 tackles including one sack, and one tackle for loss.
The South had a goal-line stand on the first series of the game inside their 1-yard line.
After that, it was all North. Smith scored on a two-yard run that made it 7-0. Natrona’s Billy Brenton intercepted a tipped pass, which led to the North team’s next score. Burkett punched it in from 1-yard out for a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.
Sheridan’s Carter McComb had a punt return that set up the North’s next score. Thunder Basin’s Ryan Baker found McComb on a 9-yard slant for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead. That was the score at halftime.
Smith connected with Shoshoni’s Nathan Cousineau on a 37-yard TD pass with 5:37 left in the third quarter. It was 27-0 in favor of the North Team.
The South Team finally got on the board as Torrington’s Chase Miller made a 25-yard field goal late in the third quarter.
The North Team answered right back with Burkett’s second TD run from seven yards out. The North added a 24-yard field goal by Worland’s Jorey Anderson with just over nine minutes left in the game for the final margin.
The South Team was held to 205 yards of total offense. Brock Bider from Rock Springs had 57 yards passing, 27 yards rushing, and caught one pass for 31 yards. Beau Bivens of Torrington threw for 45 yards. Rock Springs’ Isaac Schoenfeld had four catches for 45 yards and rushed four times for 16 yards. Rylan Wehr of Douglas added three catches for 50 yards.
The North leads the all-time series, 26-19-3. The first Wyoming Shrine Bowl was played in 1974. There was no game in 2020 due to the coronavirus.
