Sheridan Advances to 4A Championship…..Again
For those who follow Wyoming high school football, you've heard about Sheridan's Colson Coon. He was the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state in 2021 with 1648 yards rushing and 22 touchdowns. Back on Friday, Coon put on a recording-breaking show with 517 yards rushing and 7 touchdowns as the Broncs beat Cheyenne Central 63-42 in the 4A semi-finals. The previous 11-man rushing record was held by Theo Dawson of Jackson with 489 set back in 2014. Coon had 231 yards rushing in the first quarter and 309 by halftime.
He kicked off the scoring with a 77-yard gallop for a touchdown to give the Broncs a 7-0 lead. Cheyenne Central answered that big play with one of their own as Mason Counter returned a kick-off 95 yards to the house and even the game at 7. There were 42 total points scored in the first quarter alone and Sheridan came right back with a 29-yard run to the end zone from Dane Steel and the Coon reeled off a 64-yard run for a score. For Central, Mason Counter countered with a 1 yard plunge but Coon found the end zone for the 3rd time in the quarter to make it 28-14
In the 2nd quarter, Coon notched touchdowns #4 and #5 to bump the lead to 41-14. Central made some progress in the 3rd quarter as Counter had a 9-yard run for a TD and Keagan Bartlett threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Whitworth. Sandwiched in between those scores was an 11-yard pass for a touchdown by Sheridan quarterback Cael Gilbertson who found Mathew Ketner.
Coon notched touchdowns #6 and #7 in the 4th quarter and Mason Counter rang up another TD for central along with Richard Prescott catching a 42-yard TD ball.
Sheridan is 11-0 and will be looking to repeat as 4A champions as they'll take on Cheyenne East at 4 pm on Saturday from War Memorial Stadium in Laramie. Cheyenne Central got 149 yards rushing and two touchdown passes from Keagan Bartlett and the Indians end the season at 7-4.
