
Laramie Wins 4A Boys State Swimming Title Again
The Laramie Plainsmen made it eight straight Class 4A Boys’ Swimming and Diving State Championships on Saturday in Gillette. The Plainsmen won only one event but used their depth to prevail. Laramie had 14 top-six finishes and scored 236 team points. Cheyenne Central finished as the 4A runner-up at 194 points, and Campbell County took third at 169 points.
The one victory for the Plainsmen came from senior Kody Mathill in the 200-freestyle race. He touched the wall at 1:42.68. Mathill added a second place in the 100-freestyle race at 47.87 seconds. He also swam on two runner-up relays, the 200 and 400 free relays. Kelan Stakes took second in the 100-butterfly race and third in the 50-freestyle. Aiden Stakes added a third-place finish in the 200 IM and was runner-up in the 100-breaststroke race.
Three swimmers won two events apiece.
Sheridan junior Ben Forsythe was named the 4A Athlete of the Meet and 4A Athlete of the Year. He won the 50-freestyle race at 20.96 seconds. Forsythe’s second victory was in the 100-breaststroke race at 57.75 seconds. That was nearly four seconds ahead of the runner-up.
Campbell County had two swimmers win two individual events. Sophomore Cy Gallion touched the wall first in the 200 IM at 1:57.13. His second win was in the 500-freestyle race at 4:49.02. That was an event Gallion won by almost eight seconds. Fellow sophomore Brady Hunt also captured two wins. He finished first in the 100-butterfly race at 52.82 seconds. Hunt’s second win was in the 100-backstroke race at 53.23 seconds.
The Camels won two relays, as well. They rolled to a nearly four-second victory in the 200-medley relay at 1:37.85 and capped the swim meet with a win in the 400-freestyle relay at 3:14.54.
The other event winners included Colin Gilmore of Green River, who placed first in the 100-freestyle race at 47.47 seconds.
Cheyenne Central sophomore Brady Benne defended his diving title. He scored 505.05 points through 11 dives.
Kelly Walsh won the 200-freestyle relay. The Trojans’ time was 1:29.68.

Cheyenne Central head coach Josh Bott was named the 4A Coach of the Year. Talan Premer of Cheyenne Central was the 4A Assistant Coach of the Year.
