One of the top swimmers in Class 3A this year is Lander Valley High School sophomore, Ashlon Koch.

She has built off a freshman season a year ago that featured a pair of runner-up finishes at the state championships in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle races.

Koch has become a versatile swimmer for the Tigers. At the most recent meet she swam, the Gillette Invite, Koch finished only behind swimmers from Class 4A in her two individual events, the 200 IM and 100 butterfly.

The sophomore took some time recently, along with Lander head coach Shawna Morgan to visit by phone with WyoPreps’ David Settle in the video above. They talked about how the season has gone, her strengths in the pool, her love of the sport, who’s pushing her, and how she feels Lander can do at state. Coach Morgan pointed to Ashlon’s work ethic, her competitive drive, and the off-season training that’s led to this success this season. Coach Morgan also discussed Lander’s chances in Class 3A this year, as the Tigers look for a fourth straight title.

Koch is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A this season in three events, the 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly, and 500 freestyle. She is third in the 200 IM and 200 freestyle.

Lander will be at the 3A West Conference Championships Friday and Saturday in Riverton. The Class 3A State Championships are Nov. 7-8 in Gillette at the Campbell County Aquatics Center.
