Wyoming never trailed in the game. They were tied at 8-8 and 16-16 but Gilbert’s TD grab off a pass by Bennett gave the Cowboy State the lead for good at 22-16.
Gilbert then had his pick-six right at halftime, which gave Wyoming a 30-16 lead.
Nebraska scored twice early in the second half and trimmed Wyoming’s lead to 30-28.
Bennett responded with a TD run for a 38-28 lead.
After Nebraska scored with under two minutes left in the third, Wyoming pulled away.
Up 38-36, Cree Jones hauled in a TD pass from Bennet with 27 seconds left in the third quarter. Wyoming recovered an onside kick. Ackerman scored his first touchdown run with 7:39 left for a 54-36 lead.
After a Nebraska TD, Ackerman added his second TD run with 3:51 left, as the Cowboy State began to pull away. Risner’s second TD catch from Bennett with 1:20 left in the game put the finishing touch on a Wyoming victory, 68-44.
Wyoming regained the lead in the overall series, 6-5. It’s the first win for Team Wyoming since 2019.
The 68 points scored tied the single-game record for points by the winning team.
