A pair of defending champions start the new high school football season atop the WyoPreps Coaches and Media Preseason Football Poll.

Four teams that finished second last fall are ranked first. That means there is one classification with a tie.

Overall, 17 of last season’s 20 teams that made the semifinals are ranked in the preseason top five.

Class 4A has the tie atop its ranking. Defending champion Cheyenne East and runner-up Thunder Basin both received six first-place votes. The Bolts earned one more No. 2 vote but the third through fifth-place votes produced the same amount of points in the voting. The Sheridan Broncs edged the Rock Springs Tigers for third in the poll by nine total points. Natrona County rounds out the top five.

The Broncs are 1-2 in Class 3A. Jackson edged defending champ Cody by six points in the voting. Cody received one more first-place vote than Jackson. It was second and third-place votes that pushed Jackson over the top. It was a tight race for third in the rankings. Powell is third by six points in the balloting ahead of Douglas. Star Valley is fifth. The Braves were the only other school to receive more than one vote for the top five.

In 2A, last year’s runner-up Torrington earned the majority of No. 1 votes to take the top spot in the poll. The Trailblazers got 11 first-place votes. The Wheatland Bulldogs grabbed the second position. Mountain View was tabbed in third. Defending champ Lyman starts the year in fourth. The Lovell Bulldogs round out the rankings at No. 5. Five more teams received votes in Class 2A.

Defending state champ Southeast begins the new season atop the Class 1A 9-Man poll. The Cyclones received nine first-place votes. They are followed by runner-up Lusk, who also earned three first-place votes. Shoshoni checks in at No. 3 This is the second class with a tie in the top five. Sharing fourth in the poll are Pine Bluffs and Rocky Mountain.

Class 1A 6-Man has Meeteetse ranked No. 1. The Longhorns got seven of the 12 first-place votes. They lost in the title game last fall to the Farson-Eden Pronghorns, who begin the new season in second. Encampment edged Little Snake River by six points in the voting for third. The Dubois Rams are fifth in the preseason poll.
