One regional champion volleyball player and a couple of clutch football players were selected as the WyoPreps Athletes of the Week. These three winners excelled against the competition in the 12th week of the fall prep sports season for 2024-25. Hadley Leithead of Southeast, Caden Clifford from Big Piney, and Riverton’s Hunter Saltsgaver were chosen for the honors. Leithead helped the Cyclones to a regional team title last weekend. Clifford and Saltsgaver helped their teams to first-round playoff victories.
WYOPREPS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK WINNERS 11-6-24
Girls Winner
Leithead led Southeast to the 1A East Regional volleyball championship in Guernsey. The Cyclones went 3-0 and earned the top seed at this week’s state tournament. Leithead led Southeast with 36 total kills last weekend. She had a .324 hitting percentage. The junior added three aces, eight total blocks, and ten digs from the middle hitter position.
Hadley discussed what led to a successful weekend for her individually and the team. She pointed out how connected the team is, how that aids their play, and more.
Boys Winners
Clifford ran for 259 yards in the Punchers’ 24-14 playoff win over Southeast last Saturday in the quarterfinal or first round of the high school football playoffs. Big Piney got some redemption for a 30-8 loss to the Cyclones back in Week 1 of the regular season. Clifford scored three TDs and averaged 9.2 yards per rush. He added 17 defensive points with 8.5 tackles in the victory.
Caden spoke to WyoPreps about his performance. We asked him about his play considering everyone knows he’s going to get the ball a lot. He credited his line, described what the key is for him behind the line, how perhaps the Punchers have been overlooked, back in the same spot in the semifinals as last year, and more.
Sharing the boys’ honor is Hunter Saltsgaver. He helped the Wolverines to a major playoff comeback win, 36-35, in double overtime at home against Powell last Friday night. Saltsgaver ran for 146 yards and 3 TDs. He had both of Riverton’s OT touchdowns. Saltsgaver added two catches for 32 yards and kicked two PATs. He scored 20 of the Wolverines’ 36 points. On defense, Saltsgaver added three tackles.
Hunter described the wild comeback with WyoPreps. He gave a lot of love to his offensive line, what he saw on his two OT TDs, going for the two-point try and the win in the second OT, how he’s learning football as a soccer player, and more.
Congratulations to our weekly winners, Hadley, Caden, and Hunter!
