Wunder and Nield Earn WyoPreps Athletes of the Week 10-9-24

An all-around volleyball player and record-setting wide receiver on the football field received the WyoPreps Athlete of the Week honors on Wednesday. The winners for the eighth week in the fall high school sports season of 2024-25. Skyla Wunder from Lingle-Ft. Laramie and Bryson Nield of Star Valley were selected. Wunder helped the fourth-ranked Doggers to another successful week on the court. Nield had a career night catching the football in a road victory last Friday night.

Girls Winner

Wunder runs the show for No. 4 Lingle-Ft. Laramie. She guided the Doggers to a 3-1 record and a runner-up finish at the Morrill Tournament. Lingle earned a 3-0 conference win over Lusk and beat their first two opponents in the Morrill tourney before falling in the championship match to Garden County, NE, who is 18-3 in the 2024 season. Wunder had 15 kills and a .349 hitting percentage for the week. She contributed 38 assists running the offense, had 38 digs on defense, 8 blocks, and 6 service aces.

WyoPreps spoke with Skyla Wednesday morning. She reflected on how she played, how the team played last week, how she contributed across the court, her mindset when running the offense, why she loves volleyball and more.

Boys Winner

Nield is the second straight boys’ recipient from SVHS. He caught 18 passes last Friday night for a new state record 291 yards (officially) receiving in Star Valley’s 42-7 victory at No. 4 Powell. Nield eclipsed the old record of 281 yards set by Brady Mangus of Glenrock against Rawlins set on Sept. 25, 1998. Nield took one of his receptions in for a touchdown. The top-ranked Braves improved to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in the 3A West Conference.
