Wagner, Overfield, and Sheridan Earn WyoPreps Athlete of the Week Honors 9-25-24 [VIDEOS]

Two state champion golfers and a record-setting football team are the recipients of our WyoPreps Athlete of the Week awards. The week six winners for the 2024-25 high school sports season were 2A golf state champion Tazlynn Wagner, 2A state golf champion Hayden Overfield, and the Sheridan Broncs football team. Wagner and Overfield posted some impressive victories to win their first state titles on the golf course. Sheridan set a record for consecutive victories on the gridiron.

Girls Winner

Wagner set a new Class 2A record for lowest total score at the state golf championships in Sheridan. She shot 75 in the first round last Friday and followed that with a 78 in the final round last Saturday at Kendrick Golf Course. Her two-day total of 153 established the new mark. Wagner was dominant and won by 16 shots.

WyoPreps caught up with Wagner on Wednesday. She said that being a state champion has fully sunk in, described how she played, what went well, what she struggled with, how she tried to stay locked in, her reaction to the record, and more.

Boys Winners

Overfield made an unbelievable comeback to snag the boys’ title. He trailed by five shots after the first round. The deficit reached seven shots after eight holes in the final round. Somehow, Hayden made up all seven shots over the next eight holes. He took the lead on the 17th hole and held on for a one-shot victory. Overfield shot 82 and 78 for a total of 160. He became the sixth state champion from Thermopolis over the last seven seasons. Overfield led the Bobcats to their 11th title in school history and the sixth in the last seven seasons.

WyoPreps visited with Overfield on Wednesday. He discussed the feeling of winning, how he rallied from a big deficit with ten holes left, what he focused on, which parts of his game helped him the victory, and more.

Finally, how about the Sheridan Broncs? Not much more can be said other than wow. Sheridan won its 35th consecutive game last Friday night at home over No. 2 ranked Cheyenne East. The final was 48-18. The Broncs have not lost a game since the 2021 regular season, nearly three full calendar years. Only six of the 35 games have been decided by single digits. It’s an amazing run for the three-time defending 4A state champs. Our Frank Gambino visited with head coach Jeff Mowry and players Garrett Way and Ty Gilbertson.
