A pair of underclassmen receive the WyoPreps Athlete of the Week honor presented by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Wyoming. Cheyenne South junior wrestler Trinity Warner and Lingle-Ft. Laramie sophomore basketball player Brady Cook earned recognition for last week’s performances on the wrestling mat and basketball court.

Warner won the 100-pound bracket at the annual Shane Shatto Memorial Wrestling tournament last Saturday in Douglas. She won her first match by pin and followed that with a 6-3 decision. Warner pinned her last two opponents, including a young lady from Kelly Walsh in the championship match. Warner remains undefeated on the season at 11-0. She is ranked No. 2 in her division in the most recent Wyowrestling.com rankings. Warner will take on the No. 1 ranked girls’ wrestler in her division at this weekend’s Thomas Soda Ash Tournament in Green River.

WyoPreps visited with Warner on Wednesday. She recapped her big weekend, took us through the matches, and touched on how she got into wrestling, what she has improved on, and what she needs to do to continue to get better.

Cook helped the Lingle-Ft. Laramie Doggers to a 4-0 mark at the 2A East Smackdown basketball tournament last weekend in Lingle and Lusk. Cook and the Doggers beat three of the top four ranked teams in their class to improve to 8-2 on the season. Cook scored 90 points over the four games, an average of 22.5 points per game. He had 26 points on 11-12 field goal shooting versus Sundance. In a double-overtime victory against then No. 4 Big Horn, Cook scored 41 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, and blocked 7 shots. He was 16-18 from the field and 9-11 at the free-throw line.

WyoPreps’ David Settle chatted with Brady Cook on Wednesday about the big weekend and how Lingle accomplished the 4-0 weekend. They discussed keys to the Doggers’ success, his play, how a few of his teammates helped his play last weekend, and what it will be like going forward as more of a favorite in 2A boys instead of trying to climb the ladder.

Congrats to Trinity and Brady!

The WyoPreps Athlete of the Week nominations are open from Fridays at 5 p.m. until Mondays at 9 a.m. Coaches, family, friends, and student-athletes can nominate deserving student-athletes. Early and late nominations are not accepted.
