The WyoPreps Athlete of the Year accolade for Boys’ Basketball is presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming and Wyld Gear. Our first winner was Cheyenne Central High School’s Joe Sawyer. The Gatorade Player of the Year winner led the Indians to a 25-3 overall record and the Class 4A state championship in 2024.

Sawyer averaged 15.5 points per game and shot 55 percent from the floor and 78 percent at the free-throw line. Sawyer added 5.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and one steal per game. In the 4A title game against Laramie, which Central won by three points, Sawyer scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, which helped the Indians prevail over the Plainsmen. He added seven rebounds in the championship game. Sawyer helped the Indians average 67.5 points and 47 percent shooting per game last season. Those ranked second in Class 4A. Sawyer was chosen the 4A East Player of the Year by the coaches and helped the Indians to the 4A Southeast Conference title in the regular season. He led Central in scoring 13 times during the 2023-24 season and rebounding six times. Sawyer received his second all-state honor in basketball after the season finished.

WyoPreps caught up with Sawyer recently to discuss his award. He was excited to receive the honor, summarized how the season went with a close-knit group, the focus on one goal, described how they changed how they played, his improvements, and more.

Join us in congratulating Joe Sawyer!
