The first winner of the WyoPreps Athlete of the Year award for Boys’ Outdoor Track and Field, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming and Wyld Gear, is Big Horn’s Gavin Stafford. Stafford. He capped an outstanding senior season with three individual titles, a state record, three class records, a relay win, and a team title at last month’s state track championships.

Stafford won three individual state titles at the state track meet. He won the 2A 100 meters and set a new overall state record in the prelims at 10.31 seconds. He won the 2A 200 meters and set a class record at 21.16 seconds in the prelims. His mark established a new overall state record, but that record was broken the next day in the 4A finals. Stafford added a victory in the 2A long jump with a leap of 23-00.75. He won by over two feet and established a class record with the jump. He also ran the anchor leg on Big Horn’s victorious 4x100 meter relay at 43.07 seconds, which was a 2A class record time. Stafford’s efforts helped Big Horn win the 2A team title for the second straight year. He also went three-for-three at the 2A East Regional track championships the week before the state track meet. Stafford also won the 100-meter dash and long jump at the Wyoming Track Classic in Casper at the end of April.
