Sheridan distance runner Austin Akers will be going to Laramie in the fall to compete for the University of Wyoming cross country and track teams. Akers still has the outdoor prep season to go as a senior but had 3, top finishes at the State Indoor Track Meet in Gillette in 2023. He placed 4th in the 800-meter run, 3rd in the 1600, and 5th in the 3200. Akers was the indoor state champion in 1600 in his junior year.

In his outdoor career, he took 4th place at the 2022 4A State Meet in the 800 and 3200 with a 5th place finish in the 1600 meters. He also ran on Sheridan's 4x800 relay team that took 3rd. As a sophomore, Akers took 2nd at state in the 1600 and 5th in the 3200 meters and his 4x800 relay team was 2nd in 4A.

Akers has been more than solid in cross country with a 9th place finish at the 2022 4A State Championships in 16.41.12. He took 3rd as a junior in 4A in 2022 with a clocking of 16.22.29 and 5th as a sophomore with a time of 16.33.07. Akers took 7th at State as a freshman in 17.02.30 so there was exponential improvement during his prep career
