Big Horn's Avon Barney Inks with South Dakota State for Baseball

Fresh off a sterling performance in the 2A Football State Championship game, Big Horn's Avon Barney now has his sights set on college baseball, signing with Division I South Dakota State. Barney is a 2-time First-Team, All-State selection as a pitcher for the American Legion Sheridan Troopers. He was named the Legion AA Pitcher of the Year with 10 wins in the 2024 season. Barney throws an 87 MPH fastball, an 82 MPH cutter, and a 70 MPH change-up. He also played in the outfield for the Troopers.

Barney had a terrific game as Big Horn's quarterback as the Rams downed Cokeville 42-12 in the 2A Football Championship game on Friday in Laramie. He was 19-29 for 316 yards and 4 touchdowns and for the season, he threw for 1786 yards with 16 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, in his junior year. Barney threw for 2016 yards with 22 TD passes and 5 picks.

South Dakota State is located in Brookings and plays in the Summitt League. This past season, the Jackrabbits went 20-30-1
