Cheyenne Sixers Win 2024 ‘AA’ Baseball State Championship [PHOTOS, VIDEOS]
The Cheyenne Sixers won their fifth consecutive Wyoming American Legion Baseball 'AA' State Championship last Friday in Casper. The Sixers were pushed to a second championship game, but they dominated and won 14-0 in five innings over the Gillette Roughriders. It is the 21st state championship for the Sixers in the last 24 seasons.
Game one went to the Riders, who held off the Sixers, 3-2. Mason Tafoya's RBI single in the bottom of the third gave Cheyenne a 1-0 lead. Gillette took the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth. Dominic Hecker smacked a two-run double to left field for a 2-1 lead. Cason Loftus followed with an RBI single to right field, which made it 3-1. An RBI infield single by Cheyenne's Caden Westby pulled the Sixers within 3-2. Riley Schilling allowed one hit and one walk for the rest of the game. He threw all seven innings and gave up two runs on five hits on 84 total pitches. Schilling walked two and struck out four.
It was all Sixers in championship game number two. Cheyenne scored six runs in the first inning and eight more in the second. The final score was 14-0. The game was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Braden Pearson tossed a 4-hit shutout for the Sixers. He struck out three and issued zero walks. The Sixers had ten hits and took advantage of eight walks and two errors. Hayden Swaen had three hits and three RBIs. Nolan Horton added a 3-run triple, and Pearson contributed an RBI double and RBI walk.
Pearson was named the state tournament MVP.
Cheyenne advances to the Northwest Regional Tournament in Billings, MT, on Aug. 7-11, 2024. The Sixers will face Eugene (OR) Challengers, on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 9:30 a.m. The tournament is at Dehler Park in Billings, MT.
