Cheyenne Sixers to Face Gillette Riders for the 2024 ‘AA’ State Baseball Title
The state championship game for the 'AA' level of Wyoming American Legion Baseball is set for Friday. The Cheyenne Sixers will take on the Gillette Riders after both teams won games on Thursday, Day 4, of the 2024 state tournament in Casper. It will be the third time in the last five years, these two teams face off with a state title on the line. The first pitch is at 11 a.m. If a second championship game is needed, it will start at 2 p.m.
The Gillette Riders knocked out the Laramie Rangers with a 13-1 victory on Thursday afternoon at Mike Lansing Field. After a scoreless first two innings, the Riders took control with a four-run third inning. They added two runs in the fourth and capped it with seven in the sixth inning. Riley Schilling had two hits & three RBIs. Mason Drube had a two-run single and a sacrifice fly for three RBIs. Grayson Sargent worked 5.2 innings for the win on the mound. He allowed one run on five hits.
It was an all-Cheyenne matchup in the second game on Thursday, as the Sixers faced off against their program counterpart, the Hawks. After a 1-0 lead for the Hawks, the Sixers took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and steadily pulled away. Their big frame was a five-run fifth inning. Mason Tafoya, Landon McAnelly, and Braden Pearson had two hits and two RBIs each.
Cheyenne needs one victory for their fifth straight 'AA' baseball state championship. Gillette has to beat the Sixers twice to win the title. It would be their first since 2014.
The winner advances to the Northwest Regional American Legion Baseball Tournament or Region 7 Tournament in Billings, MT, on Aug. 7-11, 2024.
