Big Piney and Southeast played each other to start the 1A 9-Man football season back in September, with Southeast winning 30-8. The teams met again in the opening round of the playoffs on Saturday, and this time, Big Piney prevailed 24-14. The Punchers won the state title in this classification a year ago and are one win away from a return visit to Laramie.

This was a rugged game with some excellent defense and timely offensive plays. Big Piney led 16-14 at halftime with the Puncher defense tightening the screws in the 2nd half. Big Piney has an effective running game that can chew some clock, keeping the opposing offense off the field.

The Punchers are 5-3  but went 4-1 in conference play. They have a big challenge this week in the semi-final round with a road game at Lingle-Fort Laramie. The win on Saturday broke a 2 game losing streak after winning 4 in a row and they've been in the playoffs in 7 of the last 8 years. Southeast has a proud football program and has missed the playoffs just twice since 1997. The Cyclones went 5-4 this season.
