Burlington’s Clayton Edwards is Heading to Western Colorado for Track and Field
Burlington senior Clayton Edwards will continue to compete in track and field at the collegiate level next year.
Edwards recently signed with the Western Colorado Mountaineers program for sprinting and jumping.
As a junior, Clayton was the Class 1A state champion in the high jump at the state track meet last May. He cleared 6-feet for the victory. Edwards was also runner-up in the 200 meters with a personal-best time of 22.48 seconds. He added a fourth-place finish in the 100 meters and was on the fifth-place 4x400 meter relay team for the Huskies. Clayton helped Burlington finish fourth in the team standings.
At the 1A West Regional track meet the week before, Edwards won the 100 and 200 meters, plus the high jump.
His top time in the 100 meters is 11.12 seconds. Edwards’ best mark in the high jump is 6-2. His best leap in the long jump is 19-11.
In 2021, as a sophomore, Edwards helped Burlington win the Class 1A boys’ team state championship. Clayton helped the Huskies’ 4x400 meter relay team take third place. He finished tied for third in the high jump, was fifth in the 200 meters, and competed in the triple jump.
Edwards also plays basketball at Burlington High School. He averaged 5.5 points and four rebounds per game as a junior in the 2021-22 season. The Huskies went 11-15 last season and won the consolation trophy at the 1A boys basketball state tournament.
Western Colorado University is in Gunnison, CO. The Mountaineers compete at the Division II level of collegiate athletics and are a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
