Evanston Senior Payton Vernon Will Throw at Idaho State
Evanston senior thrower Payton Vernon recently signed with Idaho State University for track and field.
Vernon just placed third at last weekend’s indoor track state championship in Gillette. His best throw was 56-6.25.
During the 2022 indoor season, the senior won the shot put at the Idaho State Snake River Open on Jan. 14, 2022. He added a fourth-place performance at the BYU Indoor Invitational on Jan. 22, 2022.
He won the title as a junior in 2021 with a toss of 54-11.50. Vernon placed 13th as a sophomore in 2020.
In outdoor track and field, Vernon took third in the shot put (56-7.50) and fourth in the discus (144-09) as a junior at last year’s 4A state championship. He won the shot put at the Roy Peck Invitational in Riverton last spring and finished first at the 4A West Regional in Riverton. Vernon’s sophomore season was lost to the pandemic, as the season was canceled. As a freshman in 2019, he finished 13th in the shot put.
Vernon also played football for the Red Devils. He was a running back and defensive lineman last fall. The senior helped Evanston finish with an overall record of 5-4 and 1-4 mark in conference games.
Idaho State University is located in Pocatello, ID. The Bengals compete in the Big Sky Conference.
