Thunder Basin senior Laney McCarty will be furthering her basketball career in college after signing at Dakota Wesleyan University earlier this spring.

McCarty was a two-time Class 4A all-state and all-conference selection for the Bolts.

She helped Thunder Basin to a runner-up finish at the state tournament in the 2022-23 season. The Bolts were 22-5 her senior season. They went 5-1 and captured the 4A Northeast Conference crown and the 4A East Regional title.

McCarty led Thunder Basin at 17.8 points per game, which was third-best in 4A girls’ basketball during the 2022-23 season. She shot 49 percent from the floor and 79 percent at the free-throw line. McCarty shot 34 percent beyond the arc and added 5.1 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game. She had a career-high 27 points against Rock Springs last season.

As a junior, Laney averaged 14.7 points per game and shot 44 percent from the field. She contributed 5.3 rebounds and two steals per game. McCarty also shot 72 percent at the charity stripe. She helped the Bolts to a third-place finish at the 4A state tournament in 2022 and an overall record of 21-6. They finished second at 9-1 in the 4A East Conference and took second at the 4A East Regional basketball tournament.

McCarty played in 20 games as a sophomore in the 2020-21 season. She averaged 2.1 points per game and earned her first varsity letter.

Dakota Wesleyan University is in Mitchell, SD. The Tigers compete at the NAIA level of college athletics. DWU is in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC).
