PhotoFest: Burlington Posts Narrow Win to Take 1A 6-Man Title
Out of the five state championship football games, the only game where the opponents did not meet in the regular season was the Burlington-Little Snake match-up in 1A 6-Man on Saturday in Laramie. These two teams did meet for the title last season and Little Snake River entered the contest with a 30-game winning streak.
Burlington came out and took the game right to LSR with 3 touchdowns in the 1st quarter. Jordan Michaels threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Weston Godfreds, which was followed by a 1-yard run for a TD by Joe Bassett. Michaels produced a 6-yard scoring run and sandwiched in between that was a 31-yard TD pass from Mason Jones to Isaiah Skalberg to put Little Snake River on the board.
LSR turned around and outscored Burlington 20-6 in the 2nd quarter as Bridger Cozzens reeled off a 17-yard run to the end zone, Seth Maxon got in from the one and Mason Jones threw a touchdown pass to Alexander Kunsman. The Huskies' lone score in the 2nd quarter was a touchdown catch from Joe Bassett so at the intermission, it was 26 all.
Cozzens gave the Rattlers the lead in the 3rd quarter on a 16-yard run for a score and Burlington responded with Michaels finding Jordan Casey for 19 yards and a TD. Cozzens scored again on a 3-yard scoring run so after 3 quarters of play, the Rattlers led 39-34.
There was just one scoring play in the 4th quarter and Burlington's Joe Bassett raced to the end zone from 20 yards out to make it 42-39. The Huskies came up with a brilliant defensive stand in the final 3 minutes when the Rattlers were on the 5-yard line. Burlington converted a 4th down and 6 from their own 10-yard line to seal the 42-39 victory.
Burlington's Jordan Michaels ran the ball for 98 yards and threw for 134 as the Huskies went 10-1 this year. Little Snake River who ended the season 9-1 got 165 yards rushing from Seth Maxon and 104 yards on the ground from Bridger Cozzens. It was Burlington's first state title since 1994.
