PhotoFest: Pine Bluffs Tramples Greybull in 9-Man Playoffs

Pine Bluffs has been a state championship contender in 1A 9-Man this season despite dealing with some tough teams in the southeast part of Wyoming. The Hornets were the #2 seed from the East and leveled Greybull in the quarterfinal round 75-22. It's the 2nd time this season that Pine Bluffs has cracked 70 points as they improved to 8-1 on the year.

Gabe Federer started the scoring extravaganza for Pine Bluffs with a 4 yard run for a touchdown to make it 7-0 but Greybull answered the 2nd quarter thanks to a 7 yard scoring trot from Caiden Sorenson. The Buffs went for 2 and made so they led at this point 8-7.

Pine Bluffs came back with a touchdown pass from Cartsen Freeburg to Shawn Shmidl that went for 31 yards, plus Freeburg kicked a couple of field goals giving the Hornets a 20-8 lead at halftime.

The 3rd quarter was eventful starting with another Freeburg to Shmidl TD connection that covered 27 yards and Jesus Solis added a 9 yard run to the end zone. Greybull hit paydirt on a Lucas Bolzer 8 yard touchdown spurt but Pine came right back with yet another Freeburg to Shmidl TD play so after 3 quarters of play, PB led 40-16.

Pine Bluffs rang up an astonishing 5 touchdowns in the 4th quarter with Ryan Mohren running it in from 20 yards out, Freeburg threw another TD pass to Shmidl, followed by a 39 yard run to the house by Freeburg. In additon to all that, Ty Scarborough had a run that ended up as a touchdown and Shmidl came through with a pick 6. Greybull did score in the 4th as Sorenson recorded his 2nd TD of the game but that was not nearly enough.

Pine Bluffs will host Saratoga in the semi-final round of the 9-Man playoffs on Friday afternoon. The Hornets downed the Panthers 63-7 during the regular season. Greybull finshed the season at 5-3, highest win total since 2018.
