Both the girls' and boys' race at the 3A State Cross Country Championship had very competitive fields so winning a deal like this is extra-special. On the boys' side, Charlie Hulbert of Cody outdistanced Trajn Swalstad of Worland by 7 seconds to win the state title. Hulbert took 3rd at last year's state meet and also placed 3rd in the 4A 3200 meter run at the 2022 State Track Meet. Hulbert has been at the front of the pack just about entire season so a victory at the Cheyenne Country Club on Saturday wasn't really a surprise.

In 3A girls, Zena Tapia has been battling out out with Lander's Ameya Eddy all year and at the end, Tapia pulled away to win by a convincing margin. Tapia made big-time improvement from a year ago when she placed 10th at the 2022 State Meet. But she has proved her mettle in distance running by taking 3rd in the 3A 3200 and 1600 meter runs at the State Track Meet back in May.

We talked with both Hulbert and Tapia and they were certainly happy about winning and knew full well that hard work would pay off.
