The dynasty continued last Saturday for the Lander Tigers boys’ swimming and diving program. They won their 28th straight Class 3A Boys Swimming and Diving State Championship in Laramie. The Tigers won eight of the 12 events and scored 308 team points for their latest title. Three swimmers, Benny Kulow Sr.), Finn Richards (Jr.), and Reed McFadden (Sr.) won two events each, and Lander won two of the three relays.

The Lander Tigers Won the 3A Boys State Swim Championship Again

WyoPreps caught up with Kulow and Richards to reflect on the continuation of the title streak, their individual wins, and special honors. Kulow was named the 3A Athlete of the Year, while Richards was one of three swimmers who shared the 3A Athlete of the Meet award. We also spoke with Lander head coach Shawna Morgan about the latest title, how this one was different, what was key for the Tigers, and more.

Kulow captured the 200-freestyle race at 1:45.97. His second win was in the 100-freestyle at 47.22 seconds. Richards won the 50-freestyle at 21.31 seconds and the 100-backstroke race at 53.88 seconds. McFadden touched the wall first in the 200 IM (1:57.85) and 100 butterfly (51.16). The Tigers’ 200-medley relay finished first at 1:34.95. Their 400-freestyle relay capped the victory at 3:16.39.

Morgan shared the 3A Coach of the Year honor with Mike Miller from Buffalo and Jim Levine of Evanston.

Richards shared the 3A Athlete of the Meet award with Buffalo’s Tommy Wonka and Malachi Villarreal of Kemmerer.

Wonka defended his title in the 100-breaststroke race at 56.79 seconds. Villarreal won the 500-freestyle at 4:55.0. Buffalo won the 200-freestyle relay at a time of 1:29.23.

The diving title went to Eric Hughes from Evanston. He scored 428.85 points over 11 dives.
