Two-sport state champion Katyana Dexter from Pinedale has signed to compete in track and field at Utah Valley University. Dexter is a two-time Class 3A state champion in the discus and shot put. She is ranked No. 1 in both events in the 2024 season.

Dexter won her second consecutive 3A title in the discus last spring with a toss of 146-01, a personal best. She duplicated that feat in the shot-put last May in Casper with a toss of 42-3.25. Dexter won the same events at the 2022 state track championships. She also placed third in the discus as a freshman in 2021 and threw the shot put, as well. Dexter is a four-time state qualifier.

This season, the senior is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A in the discus and shot put and pre-qualified for the state track meet. Her season best to this point in the discus is 137-2.25. Dexter has already set a new personal record in the shot put at 44-01. That is only 3.25 inches away from the 3A state record in the shot put.

On the wrestling mat, Dexter was the 235-pound state champion in 2024. She completed the season at 25-0. As a junior in 2023, Dexter was runner-up at the same weight and finished the season at 25-3.

Joining Katyana at her signing were three of her coaches during her career. They were Holly Thayne, Middle School Throws Coach; Mike Gregory, High School Throws Coach; and Kendall Horrocks, High School Wrestling Coach.

Utah Valley University competes at the Division I level. The Wolverines are members of the Western Athletic Conference. At UVU, Dexter’s throws coach will be two-time Olympian and US champion Jill Camarena-Williams.

Dexter plans to pursue an aviation degree to become a professional pilot.
