Evanston Makes Wyoming Volleyball History at Border Wars [VIDEO]

For the first time in the Cowboy State, high school volleyball matches will be played outdoors and under the lights on Friday night in Evanston. At the ninth annual Border Wars volleyball tournament, the host Red Devils, Cokeville, Green River, and Cheyenne East are scheduled to play on a sport court at Kay Fackrell Stadium for one of their matches.

THE FIRST OUTDOOR MATCHES DURING THE HIGH SCHOOL SEASON

The idea was discussed last spring, and if the weather cooperates, it will happen tonight. A temporary sport court will be put together on the turf field at Fackrell Stadium. That will give eight teams a chance to play under the lights and in the elements. The Border Wars tournament is not new. This is the ninth year that Evanston has brought in teams from around Wyoming, Idaho, and Utah. This year's event features 17 other teams from the Cowboy State, plus three from Idaho, and six from Utah.

WyoPreps visited with Evanston head coach Erin Watsabaugh about this history-making venture. She credits Athletic Director Bubba O’Neill for turning the idea into reality and the facility staff for their help in making it possible. Watsabaugh also discussed how different it will be to play an official match outdoors.

The first game will feature Cokeville against South Summit, Utah, at 6 p.m. That’s followed by Evanston versus Bear Lake, Idaho, at 7 p.m. Then it’s Green River’s turn. The Wolves will face Bonneville High School from Idaho Falls, Idaho, at 8 p.m. The final outdoor match will feature Cheyenne East taking on Hillcrest High School from Idaho Falls at 9 p.m.
