Wyoming High School Boys Basketball Rankings: Dec. 20, 2017
With most teams taking the 2 weeks off for the holidays, the question is going to be, can they maintain their spot in the coaches/media rankings, when they return to the court?
The 4A rankings are all over the place. Laramie didn't play last week, or this week, and they have the #1 spot all to themselves. The Plainsmen will try to shake off the rust next week at a tournament in Sidney, Nebraska. Cheyenne East has to settle for #2, and will start the home portion of their schedule, when they return from break. #3 Sheridan has 1 game this week, to help stop rust from setting in. Campbell County and Evanston share the #4 ranking. The Camels will play next week, when they host the Energy Classic Tournament, while the Red Devils will take a break.
There was a little bit of movement in the 3A rankings. Rawlins was #1 last week, but the voters put them down to #2 after 3 losses vs. non-3A opponents. Cody moves up to the top spot, and should get a good game next week, when they visit 2A Wyoming Indian. Riverton and Buffalo are tied for #3, and Torrington is ranked #5. The Wolverines visit the Trail Blazers this Friday. Next week, the Bison join the 'Blazers at the tournament in Sidney, Nebraska.
There is 1 game of interest in 2A just before the holidays. On Friday, defending champ and #1 Wind River visits #3 Rocky Mountain. The Grizzlies will have their hands full this week, because they visit 1A Burlington, the day before. The rankings didn't move much from last week. Pine Bluffs is still #2, Wyoming Indian now has #4 all to themselves, and Lovell is #5.
For the time being, Burlington has separated themselves from the rest of the 1A field. The Huskies slipped by #2 Little Snake River last weekend, but there's plenty of basketball still to be played. Burlington has a big thrusday game at home vs. 2A rival and #3 Rocky Mountain. The rest of the 1A rankings has Farson-Eden and St. Stephens tied at #3, while undefeated Encampment is #5.
Disclaimer: The rankings have no official say on post-season positioning, and are only to be used as a measuring stick on the regular season. Please don't read too much into the rankings.
Because of the Holiday Break, the next rankings won't come out until January 10, 2018.
