Wyoming High School Boys Basketball Rankings: Feb. 20, 2019
The 2018-19 season is nearing its end, and that means the coaches/media rankings will soon have no value.
The top 4 in 4A have been consistent for several weeks. Sheridan and Cheyenne East remain as the unanimous #1 and #2 teams, while Kelly Walsh and Cheyenne Central hold at #3 and #4. The Indians and Thunderbirds meet for the second time this week, to close the regular season. The #5 ranking has been a revolving door for teams. Thunder Basin is back in that spot this week.
3A underwent a partial shake-down last week as the top 2 teams lost. Buffalo still holds at #1, but it's not unanimous anymore, because of last week's loss to #4 Douglas. Despite their win, the Bearcats did not move up. They have more important thing to deal with than the rankings...such as a rematch against an unranked Newcastle team that beat them 1 month ago. Lander moves back up to #2, and Rawlins drops to #3, thanks to the Outlaws' losing to unranked Wheatland last weekend. Pinedale has finally received enough love from the voters to get into the top 5 at #5.
For 2A and 1A teams, these are the final rankings of the season.
In 2A, 6 teams received votes and they are all being jammed into the top 5. Rocky Mountain and Wright tie for the #5 ranking. #1 Pine Bluffs, #3 Big Horn, #4 Glenrock as well as Wright will play at the East regional tournament, while #2 Wyoming Indian, and Rocky Mountain will play at the west regional tournament. With 4 ranked teams at one tournament, it's possible that at least 1 ranked team, may not make it to the state tournament. It's happened before.
The 1A West needs to be careful as well, since 4 ranked teams will play this weekend in Lander. #1 Encampment, #3 Farson-Eden, #4 Burlington and #5 Cokeville are guaranteed nothing in the post-season, and if they're not careful, at least one ranked team could have their season end this weekend. As for #2 Upton, they probably don't have much to worry about at the East Regional tournament, with the way they've been scoring points as of late.
Disclaimer: The rankings have no official say on post-season positioning, and are only to be used as a measuring stick on the regular season. Please don't read too much into the rankings.
