WyoPreps Big School ‘Game of the Week:’ Kelly Walsh at Rock Springs [AUDIO]
Two of the top offenses in Class 4A will square off in the WyoPreps Week 1 Big School ‘Game of the Week’ on Friday.
As voted by the fans, the game is No. 5 Kelly Walsh at top-ranked Rock Springs.
According to wyoming-football.com, this is the first time in over 30 meetings on the football field that both teams come in with undefeated records. The Tigers and Trojans are both 2-0.
WyoPreps’ David Settle had a chance to visit with Kelly Walsh head coach Aaron Makelky and Rock Springs head coach Mark Lenhardt before the big matchup. Coach Makelky discussed his teams’ start to the season, their key player, Cam Burkett, breaking in a new QB, some top defenders, and preparing for the Tigers. Lenhardt talked about the big win for his team on the road last week, handling a big-game atmosphere, what he’s seeing from QB Brock Bider, and getting ready for the Trojans in the audio interviews above.
One note, there is a chance that Burkett might not play due to an injury situation. That would be a significant loss for Kelly Walsh. Burkett is ranked third in rushing and fourth in receiving through two games in Class 4A. He’s averaging 159.5 yards per game and has scored 4 touchdowns.
The two teams are second and third in rushing yards per game this season. Kelly Walsh is at 265 yards per game on the ground, and Rock Springs is at 190. In total offense, they are second (RS) and third (KW) and separated by only four yards per game, 386-to-382.
Defensively, the Tigers have an edge and have allowed 17 yards fewer per game. Both teams have been stingy in points allowed. Rock Springs gives up just 12.5 points per game, while Trojans allow only 13.5.
Kelly Walsh leads the all-time series, 17-14, according to wyoming-football.com. The Trojans won last year’s game in Casper, 24-20.
The kick-off is at 6 p.m. at Tiger Stadium in Rock Springs.
